Setup Reduction Techniques (SMED)
Reduce machine and process changeover times to boost efficiency, profitability, and team performance
This practical, EAL-accredited workshop introduces the principles and application of Single-Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) to streamline setup and changeover operations. Over two days, participants will learn how to analyse and improve setup procedures, reduce downtime, and sustain gains through effective standardisation and team collaboration.
This course is eligible for up to 50% funding through the Welsh Government’s Flexible Skills Programme, making it an affordable way to build essential Lean skills and gain recognised accreditation.
About the Course
This two-day, hands-on workshop covers the full SMED methodology, from understanding why setup reduction matters, to carrying out and improving setup procedures using practical steps. Participants will explore the difference between motion and work, identify value-adding vs non-value-adding activities, and apply problem-solving techniques to enhance setups.
The course also addresses preparation requirements, setting measurable improvement targets, evaluating changes critically, and using Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to sustain improvements. Attendees will see how SMED integrates with wider Lean principles and fosters effective teamwork.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
Understand the principles of setup reduction and their impact on business efficiency and profitability
